  1. Bipedalism Qs

  2. Physical Evidence

  3. Questions about the questions? • Where did our first bipedal hominids appear? What was happening there, starting about 16 million years ago? • Africa – drying out; dry savanna grasslands developing, scattered deciduous woods • What are some theories as to why bipedalism emerged in primates (terrain, Hewes, Lovejoy) • Terrain – trees diminish – less reason for arboreal traits. Also, tall grasses – upright posture allows one to see (predators and prey) • How does Ardichallenge this? • Hewes – carrying food whilst moving • Lovejoy – food carrying = developing division of labor – males provision families, improve ability to reproduce

  4. Questions continued… • What did Washburn and Pilbeam suggest? • Carrying tools with to get at/utilize more foods (process plants, kill/butcher meat) • What was Milford Wolpoff’s opinion on development of full bipedalism? • Being able to carry weapons full-time – hunting/protection • May have used materials less permanent that stone or used unworked stones (prior to stone tool development) • What are some of the “costs” of bipedalism? • Harder to supply brain with blood • Much greater stress on lower body
