Data Foundations & Terminology (DFT) WG/IG & VSIGhttps://rd-alliance.org/groups/data-foundations-and-terminology-ig.htmlGary Berg-Cross (RDA US Advisory Committee)RDA P8 Joint VSIG DFT MeetingSaturday 17 Sept, 2016, 09:00 - 10:30.
Background & Match up with VSIG Objectives DFT is building an RDA data vocabulary, but leveraging others efforts too. TeD-T Term Definition Tool: http://smw-rda.esc.rzg.mpg.de/index.php/Main_Page We are cooperating with VSIG on tool requirements & harmonization We want to publish enriched vocabulary for more people to use We are interested in identifying common functionality for vocabulary publication services We could serve as a test case for VSIG
More on Synergy & Working Relation with VSIG DFT has 200+ terms versioned in the DFT term tool (TeD-T) that can serve as a test case for discussing vocabulary services and at the same time advance the consideration of various services in DFT IG. VSIG guidance to DFT on how the controlled vocabulary might be structured and published. • Discussions between the two IGs has already led to improvements starting with Use Cases • importing our vocabulary into RDF form to a VS tool supporting SKOS to the process whereby DFT captures content, • We are looking at adding a SKOS thesaurus function to identify such things as synonyms and related terms. • One interest is further vocabulary integration and harmonization using SKOS • DFT vocabulary does not include formal taxonomies in the collection, but some services for creating these is available and might be of use. • Continued collaboration will ensure the DFT vocabulary is structured and published to high standards and maybe better management such as by adding URIs etc. Volunteer work to test these ideas and present the results at joint group meetings are under discussion work includes Fellowship activities, hackathons, NDS testbeds, extension of thesaurus models and vocabulary mapping services
Thesaurus Approach has Pros and Cons “Most thesauri establish a controlled vocabulary, a standardized terminology, in which each concept is represented by one term, a descriptor, that is used in indexing and can thus be used with confidence in searching; in such a system the thesaurus must support the indexer in identifying all descriptors that should be assigned to a document in light of the questions that are likely to be asked. . . .A good thesaurus provides, through its hierarchy augmented by associative relationships between concepts, a semantic road map for searchers and indexers and anybody else interested in an orderly grasp of a subject field.” (Soergel, 2004). But the “semantic relations” between descriptors (concepts), such as NT, BT, RT can establish only a limited structure for any subject field.
