Objectives: • Identify and match eye parts to their functions. • Summarize various eye conditions and diseases. Agenda: • Eye part function review • Brainstorm eye conditions/diseases-notes • Review for quiz • Bill Nye eye video Homework: -Study (power point packet, labs, notes and section in text) for the eye quiz!

  2. Glaucoma-What Is IT? • Increased pressure of fluid within eye • It’s a leading cause of blindness worldwide • Usually happens to people over 40 • Most common type is primary openangle glaucoma • May be inherited • Often goes unnoticed b/c it doesn’t have obvious symptoms • Vision may slowly narrow until he/she is blind • Symtoms: • Seeing rainbow rings around light • Redness around eye • Severe pain in eyes and forehead • Has to be immediately treated with drugs, surgery, or laser theory or else the person goes blind

  3. What are cataracts? • Cataracts occur when there is a foggy coating on the lens which only lets you see light and dark. • Cataracts, if not treated can cause damage to the eye such as permanent loss of vision.

  4. Causes • The most common cause is old age. • Other causes are diabetes and use of drugs over a long period of time.

  5. Treatments • If the cataracts effects only the center of the lens you can use eye drops. • Most commonly it effects the entire lens which requires surgery.

  6. What is a Stye? • Develops when a gland at the edge of the eyelid becomes infected. • Develops from an eyelash follicle or an eyelid oil gland that becomes clogged from excess oil, debris or bacteria.
