  8. The Five Costliest Battles of the Civil War

  9. 1. How many more people lived in the Union States than the Confederate States? There were fourteen million more people in the Union states than in the Confederate states 2. About how many times more square miles of land did Union states have compared to Confederate states? The Union states have 1.5 million more square miles than the Confederate states. 3. How many more troops did the Union states have than the Confederate states? The Union states had 1.2 million more troops than the Confederate states.

  10. 4. Which side-the Union or the Confederacy-had greater manufacturing and iron production? The Union had greater manufacturing and iron production. 5. About how many more times more railroad track did the North have than the South? The north had about 2.4 times more railroad track than the south. 6. Which side- the Union or the Confederacy-had greater financial resources? The Union had greater financial resources than the Confederates. 7. Who had more war casualties, the North or the South? How many more did they have? The north had 120,000 more deaths than the south. 8. About how many total people were killed at Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania, and Antietam? About 169,027 people were killed at these five battles in the civil war.

  11. 9. Looking at the graphs on population and troops, why do you think the Union states were able to raise a much larger army than the Confederacy? I think the Union states were able to raise a much larger army than the Confederacy because they had slaves and ex-slaves fighting for them. 10. The Union had far greater industrial production than the Confederacy. In what ways do you think this helped the Union? This probably helped the Union because it was easier for them to acquire supplies for war. 11. The Union had about 13,000 more miles of railroad than the Confederacy. In what ways do you think this helped the Union? This probably helped the Union because it was easier to transport troops and supplies around. 12. The Union had far greater financial resources than the Confederacy. In what ways do you think this helped the Union? This helped gain troops (they can give them a higher salary) and it made it easier to buy supplies.

  12. 13. List at least two ways in which the Union’s large population gave it an advantage in the Civil War. The Union’s large population gave advantages because they had more to fight which also meant they could cover more ground. 14. How many people died in the Civil War? More than half of those deaths did not occur in the battlefield. What do you think caused the majority of these soldiers’ deaths? Around 600,000 people died in the Civil War and many died from illnesses and lack of necessary supplies. 15. The North won the Civil War, even though it lost over 100,000 more soldiers than the South. How can you explain this? The north still won the Civil War because they had more troops to start with so even though they lost more than 100,000 troops it didn’t have a huge impact on their numbers and I also think the north wanted it more and they had more of a fighting spirit because they had blacks on their side who wanted this more than anything and had been waiting centuries for it.
