  1. The Solar System by Marlee Cordo

  2. Content Area: Science Grade Level: Second Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is to teach students about the Solar System and its’ eight planets. As well as present to them a fun game to learn facts about how it is arranged. Learning Objective: Given multiple facts about our Solar System students will need to interpret the material in order to answer the questions within the power point with 100 percent accuracy. Content Standard: Standard 1, Examine the components of the Solar System. Accomplishment: Earth Science The Universe Standard CLE 3204.1.2 Which is to examine the components of the Solar System.

  3. All About Our Solar System ○ The Universe is made up of eight planets, which include their natural satellites. ○ The Sun is considered the center of our Solar System and is also a star, made up of a ball of gas. ○ Our eight planets orbit around the sun in a pattern and has a temperature of about 15 million degrees Celsius or 27 degrees Fahrenheit. ○ What is a planet? – A planet is a natural object that is massive enough for gravity to make spherical that orbits around the sun. ○ Meteors and Meteorites: ▪ They vary in size. ▪ They begin as meteorites which are chunks of rock and debris from space. ▪ They are either iron, stony, or stony-iron.

  4. An Easy Way to Remember the Planets Order **Number 1 being closest to the Sun.

  5. Exploring Our Solar System ○ Go to this website to learn more about our Solar System and about the different planets http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/ ○ Pluto was once considered a planet, until things started to change in the 1990s when astronomers found new discoveries. ○ About 4.6 billion years ago, the Solar System was formed. ○ Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are the four closest planets to the Sun and are called the terrestrial planets because of their solid, rocky surfaces.

  6. Ready For Some Questions to Test Your Knowledge So Far?

  7. From the chart given, what is the abbreviation of the planets in order? Using the first letter of the planets name. M, E, M, V, N, U, S, J V, M, E, J, M, S, U, N M, V, E, M, J, S, U, N N, J, V, M, E, M, S, U

  8. Pluto is no longer considered a planet of our Solar System, but instead a Dwarf Planet. True False

  9. Correct! Look at you go!!! ☺

  10. Try Again, next time use your mind to think harder about the answer.

  11. Summary ○ In this lesson the students will have learned all about the Solar System and be able to give the correct order of them. They will have looked at different pictures of the planets and learned facts about each of them. ○ Students will also have learned about the history and upcoming of the Solar System. Given questions about the Solar System, the students will be able to choose from multiple choice questions and answer with their knowledge the questions given to them. ○ The students will also have taken notes from the website given for future work or remembrance of facts about the Solar System.
