  2. How does Austen portray the ball and the proposal? List specific details. Ex: Mary’s singing is atrocious and Mr. Bennet has his head down. BALL: PROPOSAL: 2. WHY? What is her purpose? (entertain, persuade, inform, etc.)

Group Work In groups discuss and answer the following questions on chart paper: a) if Jane Austen has simply informed us the “ball was humiliating” and that Collins had proposed to Elizabeth and was rejected, would you have had a BETTER or WORSE impression of Collins? How would it change your opinion of the Bennet family? b) what is the purpose of Austen writing in detail almost every line of dialogue? c) which authors’ purpose- entertain, persuade, inform- does this reflect?

  4. In your groups… • Pick another scene from Chapters 10-20 to analyze for author’s purpose. On chart paper, they must write… • a) the main ideas- what happens in the scene • b) how Austen chooses to portray the event • c) WHY Austen chooses to portray the event in that way • d) which author’s purpose that scene serves
