Geography A Framework for Studying the World!
Geography: • The study of the Earth and its people
The FIVE Themes of Geography • 1. Location • 2. Place • 3. Human-Environment Interaction • 4. Movement • 5. Regions
Location • Where is it? Why is it there? Where a place is seen/located on a map.
Absolute • A specific place on the Earth’s surface. • Absolute location is calculated using a grid surface. • We can find absolute location using longitude and latitude. • In other words, Absolute location is your global address.
Example • Nashville, TN’s coordinates (36° 9' 56" N / 86° 47' 3" W)
Relative Location • Where a place is located in relation to another place • Uses directional words to describe its position. • Cardinal & Intermediate directions
Tennessee • Cardinal Directions: TN is bordered by 8 states. Arkansas and Missouri to the West. Kentucky to the North. Virginia to the Northeast. North Carolina to the East. Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi to the South. • TN is East of Arkansas and Missouri • Intermediate Directions: TN is one of the Southeastern States.
Theme 2: Place • Physical Characteristics: • Land Features • Mountains, Plains, and Pastures • Climate • Bodies of Water
Physical Characteristics of TN • Burgess Falls Cumberland Plateau
Theme 2: Place, Human Characteristics • People • Culture • Language • Religion • Buildings and Landmarks • Cities
Theme 3: Human-Environment Interaction • How people interact with their environment • Adapt: adjust or modify fittingly • Modify: to change or adjust • Depend: to rely for support
Theme 4: Movement • How places are linked to one another and the world. • The mobility of: • People • Goods • Ideas
Theme 5: Regions • What places have in common! • Political Regions • Landform Regions • Agricultural Regions • Cultural Regions
Recap! • Geography is the Study of the Earth and its People. • That’s a ton of information to cover! Geographers categorize this information in 5 THEMES. • 5 THEMES: Location, Place, Region, Movement, Human-Environment Interaction!
Geography • Geography is the Study of the Earth and its People.
The Five Themes of Geography • Location • Place • Movement • Human-Environment Interaction • Region
Location • Location: The position of a place on the Earth’s surface. • Absolute Location: The Exact spot on Earth • Relative: Where a feature/place is in relation to the features around it
Place • Place: A place, describes the characteristics of a location that make it unique or different. A place can be defined by physical features, landforms, weather patterns, etc.
Movement • Movement: How and why people, ideas, and goods move from place to place. • Trade, industrialism, technology, transportation
Human-environment Interaction • Human-Environment Interaction: How people affect their environment or natural surroundings, and how their environment affects them.
Regions • Refers to areas of the earths surface that have several common characteristics, such as land, natural resources, or population.
A Closer Look: Relative Location • Definition: Relative Location describes where a feature is in relation to another feature. • Relative location describes position using Cardinal and Intermediate directions.
What are Cardinal and Intermediate Directions? • Cardinal: North, South, East, West • Intermediate: Northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest
Bell Ringer List the 5 Themes of Geography and one word to describe each. List all the cardinal and intermediate directions!!
Globes Vs. Maps • Globe: A round model of the Earth that shows its shape, lands, and directions, as they truly relate to one another • Map: A flat drawing of all or part of the Earth’s surface. Cartographers, or mapmakers, use mathematical formulas to transfer information from the round globe to a flat map.
Globes • Advantages: Represent true landscape, distances, and directions • Disadvantages: Cannot show detailed information. They are difficult to carry
Maps • Advantages: Show small areas in great detail. Display different types of information, such as population densities or natural resources. They transport easily. • Disadvantages: They distort, or change, the accuracy of shapes and distances • Map Projections: Ways of showing the Earth on a flat piece of paper.
Parts of a Map Activity pg. 26 • What type of map is this? • How can you determine if Paris or Lyon is the capital of France? • Is Bulgaria east or west of France? • * State how you found each answer!
