JAGUAR • The jaguar weighs up to 90 pounds and measures up to 75 centimeters at the shoulder. • It is the largest member of the cat family expect for Asia and Africa. • They are strong swimmers and climbers; they are also able to bite through a shell of a turtle. • They were once found from south west United States to north Argentina, but now they are only found in Central and South America. • Most countries protect them. • Jaguars are threatened by hunting and habitat loss. • The Aztecs saw Jaguars as divine creatures and feed the hearts of sacrificed victims to them.
MACAW • Theses colorful birds are members of the parrot family. • Macaws mate for life and live up to 60 years. • They are popular species in the illegal pet trade.
PIRANHA • Can grow up to 60 centimeters long. • These vicious fish can strip the flesh from cattle in a matter of minutes.
TOCAN • They are found no where else in the world. • Their beaks can be as long as 20 centimeters which are so large to help them eat fruit.
ANACONDA • One of the largest snakes in the world. • It lies uncoiled with only its eyes above water and waits for its prey. • Rarely attacks humans unless directly assaulted
POISEN DART FROG • This frog’s poison paralyzes and sometimes kills predators. • Its bright colors keep predators away because they mean the frog is unfit to eat.
HOWLER MONKEY • This monkey is called a howler because their call can be heard up to 2 miles away. • Their extraordinary vocal chords are hidden by long black hair on its throat. • They eat mainly fruit and travel in troops of 10 to 30 monkeys.
TAPIR • The tapir swims very well and are active at night. • They are herbivores which mean they eat only plants.
GIANT OTTER • These large otters can grow up to 1.5 meters long and are found in groups of 3 to 9.
PINK RIVER DOLPHIN • Also known as the boto. • It is one of the 3 dolphins that live in fresh water. • Unlike other dolphins it has flexible neck muscles which allow it to move its head around. • They live in groups of 2 to 4
