Goals • Get a good grade (7 to 9) • Demonstrate mastery of content and language
Structure • Section I: Multiple Choice (50%) • 80 Questions: 55 Minutes • Section II: Writing • 1 Document-based Question (DBQ) • 45% of Section II Grade • 2 Free Response Questions (FRQs) • 55% of Section II Grade
Types of Questions • Prompts starting with: • Analyze • Explain • Assess • Evaluate the following statement: • Discuss • Compare/Contrast • To what extent • Examples
Mr. Z’s Tips • Organize your thoughts: Outline, outline, outline or SPRITE, SPRITE, SPRITE (3-5 minutes) • Thesis (5-7 minutes) • Answer the question directly and completely • Developed partitions/lines of reasoning • Body Paragraphs (8-13 minutes each depending on organization) • “For example…” • (DBQs: Balance of information) • Analyze, don’t narrate • Don’t freak out if you don’t remember everything • If you can’t quickly figure out a logical way to organize the essay, use your crutches: Social, Political, Economic • Don’t waste time on the conclusion for the AP exam (even though it was my favorite part of the essay to write in college!) • BUT: restate your thesis to reaffirm your overall argument.
