The Basics • All points on the coordinate plane have an address that is in the format of (x,y) • The x-coordinate represents the horizontal location of the point • The y-coordinate represents the vertical location of the point • The origin is the represented by the coordinates (0,0)
Quadrants • There are 4 quadrants on the coordinate plane. Quadrant #1 Quadrant #2 Quadrant #3 Quadrant #4
Locating Points • To find the location of any point on the coordinate plane: • Look at the x-coordinate • Starting at the origin, go left or right the number of lines the x-coordinate represents • From that point, count up or down the number of lines the y-coordinate represents • Label the point
Remember This • Let’s think of some ways to remember that we need to go left/right before we go up/down • Let’s think of some ways to remember that a negative coordinate goes left/down and positive coordinate goes right/up
