Recycling Incentive Program Final Project Presentation Holly Conner MPA 6510 December 17, 2010
What’s the Problem? • Why don’t people recycle? • Convenience • Understanding of impact • Lack of encouragement by local government/agencies
Why Recycle? • Cost Savings • Decrease in landfill use • Revenue generated from recyclables • Job creation • Positive Environmental Impact
What Can We Do? • Curbside Recycling • Convenient • Easy for residents to use • Little additional action on their part • Require extensive change to existing facilities • Lengthy implementation • Recycling Incentives • Direct reward for recycling • Cumulative rewards programs or periodic prize drawings • Pay as you throw (PAYT) • Must appeal to wide range of residents
Recycling Incentives • Little overhead and operating costs • Direct reward to consumers • Long term encouragement • Easy to use • Adaptable
RecycleBank • RecycleBank is helping to create a culture that encourages people to take simple steps towards greener lifestyles. • Through collaboration and innovation, RecycleBank motivates people to take greener actions and rewards them with points that can be redeemed from participating local and national business partners. • We believe that making greener choices shouldn’t feel at all like a trade off. It should be a trade up, and so RecycleBank rewards you every step of the way, from residential recycling to product reuse, e-waste recycling and responsible disposal, or simply focusing on using what already exists in the world today. • Operating in more than 300 communities across 26 states and the United Kingdom, learn more about our company by playing the video to the left, and click to view recent media coverage, news clips, and press releases. New Policy • “In order to increase residential recycling rates, a recycling incentive policy will be implemented to reward those that participate in existing recycling programs” • Partnership with RecycleBank
Implementation Plan • Step One: Evaluation • Needs • Incentive plan • Step Two: Communication • Spread the word! • Step Three: Measurement and Evaluation
Outcomes • Short-term • Immediate increase in participation • Job creation • Long-term • Decrease in landfill use • Sustainability • Positive environmental impact
