  8. Basic points for searching e-resources:Operators • “Fish AND Chips” – results will have both search terms. • “Chicken” OR “Fish” – search will include results with only Fish, only Chicken, and both Chicken and Fish. • “Fish” NOT “Chips” – results will exclude references that have “Chips”.

  9. Basic points for searching e-resources: Truncation • A search with a symbol that expands a search to the root word to find all variants of a term. FICT* = FICTion, FICTive, FICTions, FICTional POLIT* = POLITic, POLITical, POLITics (The symbol most often used is (*), but it can vary from database to database)

  10. Basic points for searching e-resources: Phrase searching • A search with quotation marks treats the words as a group. Very useful for works of literature. “Nouveau roman” “Éloges de trois philosophes” (Some databases do this automatically, others do not)

  11. Basic points for searching e-resources:Wildcard • A search with a symbol that expands the results to encompass multiple terms Civili?ation = civilization, civilisation (The symbol most often used is (?), but it can vary from database to database)
