  4. Fact or Crap? • The 4 Principles of Natural Selection are: • Overproduction • Variation • Mutation • Selection

  5. Fact or Crap? • Evolution can be geological or biological

  6. Fact or Crap? • A cheetah preying on the weakest member of the antelope herd is an example of Darwin’s idea of Survival of the Fittest

  7. Fact or Crap? • A good example of evolution would be the leaves on the trees changing every season

  8. Fact or Crap? • Most living things leave a fossil behind

  9. Fact or Crap? • Phenotype means that an organism’s DNA mutates more easily

  10. Fact or Crap? • Vestigial structures are things that may have been useful to an organism’s ancestors, but are no longer useful

  11. Fact or Crap? • Humans evolved from chimpanzees or apes

  12. Fact or Crap? • Similar development of embryos in different species is evidence of a common ancestor

  13. Fact or Crap? • Analogous structures mean that they have the same structure and same function

  14. Fact or Crap? • Biological classification can also be referred to as taxonomy

  15. Fact or Crap? • Humans represent a more highly evolved branch on the evolutionary tree

  16. Homologous, analogous or vestigial? • Homologous: • same structure, different function • evidence of a common ancestor • Analogous: • different structure, similar function • evidence of common environmental demands • Vestigial: • remnants of ancestor, no longer useful

  17. Homologous, analogous or vestigial?

  18. Homologous, analogous or vestigial?

  19. Homologous, analogous or vestigial? • Wisdom Teeth – remnants of a longer jaw that held more teeth from a “chewier” diet

  20. Homologous, analogous or vestigial?

  21. Homologous, analogous or vestigial? • Remnants of a 3rd eyelid

  22. The Challenge: Homologous, analogous or vestigial? Leaves on a gingko tree • Leaves on an oak tree

  23. Evolutionary trees • How would we ever know if 2 things have a common ancestor?

  24. Reading Evolutionary trees What is speciation?

  25. Speciation • These speciation events in the evolutionary tree allow for our planet to have greater biodiversity? • What is biodiversity?

  26. Speciation • What has to occur for speciation to take place?

  27. Station review • We will complete Station 1 together – it is a video station • After the video, visit each of the other stations and write the answers to each of the questions your Evolution Review Station Answer Sheet that will be taped into page 16!

  28. Study for your test! • A-day: Thursday, Jan. 23rd • B-day: Friday, Jan. 24th • Study all of your notes, PowerPoints on the wiki page, any labs or class activities! • Don’t forget to “Share” your Animal Evolution Project with me by the due date!

  29. Warm-Up • Update your Table of Contents for today – write a reminder about the Project due date • Start quizzing each other for the test!

  30. After the test • Put your test in the basket! • Pick up any graded work you want from the counter! • Sign out a Chromebook and work on your Animal Evolution Project – remember, it must be shared with me by the due date! • Remember, ALL work must be turned in by Friday!
