In the 1500’s, the Dutch were ruled by Spain. Amsterdam was becoming an important center for trade and exchange.
During the Protestant Reformation, many Dutch followed John Calvin. The Spanish rejected the Protestant Ideas.
Religious differences lead to a rebellion and the Dutch won independence from Spain.
Now the Dutch Cannot use the Spanish Trade Routes, so they must create their own.
The navy was told to help with the new voyages…what advantage does this give the Dutch?
The Cape of Good Hope was the halfway point between Amsterdam and Indonesia.
