Where in the World are the Tropical Rainforests? • 57% of Tropical Rainforests are located in Latin America • 1/3 are in Brazil • Other Tropical Rainforests are located in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands (25%) • West Africa has 18% of the World’s Tropical Rainforests http://mbgnet.mobot.org

  3. Landforms • Some landforms in the Tropical Rainforest are the Amazon river. Many other rivers are also located in the rainforest area • Another landform is the Andes Mountains http://mbgnet.mobot.org

Animals • One of the animals that live in the tropical rain forests are Chimpanzees • Chimpanzees eat nuts, leaves, and berries • Orangutans also live in the tropical rainforest • They also feed on leaves and berries • Both are in the Primate family • One type of snake that lives in the rain forest is the Vine Snake • They feed on young birds and lizards http://mbgnet.mobot.org

Plants and Vegetation • Bamboo is found in the Tropical Rainforests • It is the world’s largest grass • Sugar Cane is also found in the Tropical Rainforests • The stems of the grass plant are around ten feet tall and full of sugar! • Rubber trees originally grew in tropical rainforests but are now on plantations in southeast Asia. http://mbgnet.mobot.org/sets/rforest/index.htm

  6. Climate • In the tropical rainforests it is mainly wet and warm, hot and humid • It rains about 400 inches a year! http://mbgnet.mobot.org

  7. Questions • Are all tropical forests rainforests? Only some tropical forests are rain forests, they have to lie between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, receive rainfall regularly throughout the year (80-400 inches a year), and remain warm without frost all year long! • How much does it rain in the rainforest? It usually rains 95% of the time! • How quickly are they destroying the rainforests? Every five seconds a portion of the tropical rainforest the size of a football field is destroyed!
