What is a Local Government? • A local government will make specific laws or rules to keep order in a localized area. These rules should be designed to make the area safer, cleaner, or increase the economy.
VA Beach Local Government • The City of Virginia Beach was chartered as a municipal corporation by the General Assembly of Virginia on January 1, 1963. The City operates under Council-Manager form of government. • The Virginia Beach local government is led by the newly elected mayor William Sessoms. • Will Sessoms job is to watch over the city and make sure its safe and running smoothly. • The Mayor also has to decide what changes can or should be made in the city for the future.
VA Beach Local Government • The City Treasurer is John Atkinson and his job is to collects revenues and tax receipts due to the City in the most efficient and effective manner and invests these funds in a manner which will provide the highest investment returns. • This job is important because of all of the tourist we have. He has to make sure money gets invested in proper places so they will keep coming back.

VA Beach Local Government • City Council Meetings • A citizen who wishes to address the council concerning an agenda item must register with the city clerk or deputy city clerk at 385-4303 prior to the meeting. • The Presentation must be limited to 3 Minutes Each. • Business License • All applications must be approved by Zoning Divisions of the Department of Planning.
VA Beach Local Government • Business License • To get a Business License in VA Beach you have to: • The Zoning Division of the Department of Planning must approve the business location. • Each assumed name used constitutes a separate business and business license. The assumed name fee is $10.00, payable to City of Virginia Beach • Valid Picture I.D. • SSN • Permanent Resident Card • Beginning Date of Business • Mailing Address • Phone Numbers, Fax Numbers, Email Addresses • Signature • Assumed Gross Receipts.
VA Beach Local Government • City Ordinances • Counties may pass ordinances to define and regulate conduct which is detrimental to the public health, safety, welfare or peace. • Building Permit • A citizen may apply for a Building Permit at www.vbgov.com and fill out the application for their specific Building.
Current Projects • USGS Ground-Water Study • The purpose of the Virginia Beach shallow aquifer study is to better understand the distribution of fresh ground water, its susceptibility to contamination, and its sustainability as a long-term water supply. • Buckner Blvd. Extension • The city of VA Beach is making room for Buckner Blvd to extend from the Buckner farm to Holland and Shipps Corner roads. • Princess Anne Athletic Devolpment Project • The project, if approved, would save the city about $400,000 a year in operating expenses for the Sportsplex and the field hockey training center. It is expected to bring in about $19 million in direct revenue to the city over 20 years • Mass Transit • The City is exploring new options, including light rail, due to traffic. • Shore Drive improvements, Lesner Bridge replacement, and other initiatives underway for the Bayfront area of the City.
