GEORGIA HAS MORE COUNTIES THAN ANY OTHER STATE IN AMERICA OTHER THAN TEXAS. THERE ARE PRESENTLY 159 COUNTIES IN THE STATE. THE HEAD- QUARTERS OF COUNTY GOVERN- MENT IS CALLED THE COUNTY SEAT. SPECIAL PURPOSE DISTRICTS OR AUTHORITIES -SET UP BY CITIES OR COUNTIES TO MEET A SPECIFIC NEED NEEDS CAN RANGE FROM PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION LIKE MARTA OR HARTSFIELD-JACKSON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT -THEY ARE SOMETIMES CREATED TO ADVANCE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT -THEY ARE FUNDED BY LOANS OR USER FEES -THEY CAN BE VERY FLEXIBLE AND CROSS BOUNDARY LINES

  12. SUMMARIZING COUNTIES, NOT CITIES, ARE THE CENTER FOR POLITICAL AND CULTURAL LIFE IN GEORGIA. THE NUMBER ONE JOB OF ALL COUNTIES IS TO ASSIST THE STATE IN ADMINISTERING STATE PROGRAMS BY WORKING HAND IN HAND WITH STATE AGENCIES. THE ELECTED COUNTY OFFICIALS ARE THERE FOR THAT PURPOSE.
