  2. Catastrophic events • Any natural event that occurs on earth and causes significant changes or damage to the earth's surface. May include storms, tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.

  3. Tornadoes • Damage paths from tornadoes can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long.

  4. Eye • Hurricane winds blow in a spiral around a calm center called an eye.

  5. Earthquakes • Earthquakes release pressures in the crust so the Earth's crust can reach equilibrium again

  6. Pressure • When pressure from gases within the magma becomes too great, a volcanic eruption occurs.

  7. Wind • Wind has the biggest impact on a wildfire.

  8. Flooding • The amount of floodingis controlled by the amount of water that builds up as well as how porous the soil is.

  9. Tsunamis • Tsunamis often come ashore as a rapidly rising turbulent surge of debris filled water.

  10. In Latin America • Aug. 15, 2007 -- An 8.0-magnitude earthquake strikes near the coast of central Peru. At least 514 people are killed and 1,090 injured. More than 35,500 buildings are destroyed and more than 4,200 buildings are damaged. Widespread communications and power outages occur. • Feb. 27, 2010 -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake shakes coastal Chile in the early hours of the morning, killing over 700 people. • June 2, 2010—Sink hole in the wake of a tropical storm Agatha in Guatemala.
