Catastrophic events are sudden and often natural occurrences that result in significant change and destruction. They can be weather-related (hurricanes, floods), geological (earthquakes, tsunamis), or due to human error (wildfires). Earthquakes, characterized by strong vibrations, occur along fault lines and have various environmental and human impacts. Wildfires feature intense fires over large areas and can produce strong winds, leading to devastating consequences.

What is a catastrophic event? • Sudden, usually naturally occurring situations where change and destruction occur. • Some are man made, some are caused by nature.
3 Groups of Catastrophic Events • Weather event: hurricane, tornado, flood • Geological Event: volcano, earthquake, tsunami • Human Error: wildfires
Catastrophic Events • All catastrophic events are the Earth’s way of maintaining equilibrium during change.
Earthquakes Features: Strong vibrations. Formed: Earth’s surface releases energy which causes vibrations. Occurs: Along fault lines Environmental Impact: Landslides, mudslides, broken gas lines, destruction of buildings, avalanches, fires, breaks in the ground, tsunamis. Human Impact: loss of life, property damage
Wildfire • Main Features: intense fires over a large area. They can produce winds that can be 10x stronger giving fire more oxygen.
