OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE • The main objectives of this course are to communicate or discuss some ideas about acquiring foreign language that emerge from tefl and to make some suggestions of how these might benefit language teaching.
Introduction • Luaguage is at the centre of human life. • Through language : • We plan our lives • Remember our past; • Exchange ideas and experiences; • Form our social and individual identities; Cicero said in 55 BC: “The one thing in which we are especially suerior to beasts is that we speak to each other”
What is TEFL? • EFL means Engish is studied by people who live in places where English is not the first language of the people who live in the country, such as in Indonesia. • ESL means English is studied by people who speak other languages as their first language, such as Spanish, Indonesian, Chinese, but live in places where English is the first language, such as in Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK.
Goals of EFL and ESL are quite different? • In many countries, the primary goal is to pass English exams, not necessarily at preparing them to communicate in English • In ESL, the goal is tied to literacy – use English as does a native speaker in order to be able to assimilate into mainstrem English-speaking population
