  2. IRCEL-CELINE ? (1) • Agreement between 3 Belgian Regions (1994) • Main tasks : • Interregional Calibration Bench • Interregional Data Processing Center • Not-validated data • Website with (near) real-time AQ info • Smog info/warning (ozone, PM, …) • Data exchange EEA, … • Interregional Air Quality database • Validated data • European/International Reporting • NFP EEA

  3. IRCEL-CELINE ? (2) • AQ experts : eg. new EU Cleaner Air Directive • Air Quality modelling (deterministic and neural network models) for Policy support : • Forecasts of SMOG episodes • CHIMERE • SMOGSTOP, OVL • Impact of policy measures on current and future AQ • BelEUROS

  4. Example • Forecast for PM10 : episode 24 – 25 March 2007 • Comparison of measurements and model forecast for PM10

  5. Hourly concentrations of PM10 24 and 25 March 2007

  6. Measured PM2.5 & PM10 in Brussels PM10 about 70% of PM = coarse fraction PM2.5 24 March 2007 25 March 2007

  7. CHIMERE + OVL forecast (Day+1) High concentrations NOT predicted ! 24 March 2007 25 March 2007

  8. NOAA HYSPLIT MODEL Backward trajectory ending at 02 UTC 25 March 2007 Trajectory + Satellite info Sahara dust! http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov (21/03/2007) Trajectory + Satellite information could improve forecasts !

  9. Conclusion There are events leading to exceedances of EU air quality limit values. However, they can currently not be forecasted by our forecast models. These events include e.g. Sahara dust, dust from forest fires and from biomass burning. Trajectory + Satellite information (AOD data) could improve forecasts !

  10. IRCEL’s suggestions for further work • Take long range transport of air pollutants better into account by improvement of Boundary Conditions of models based on : • Aerosol Optical Depth (PM10) • Tropospheric Ozone column (O3, NO2) for the assessment and scenario model BelEUROS and for the forecast-models (OVL and CHIMERE) for PM10/O3
