Session: 1 08:30 – 8:45 Welcome and opening remarksGeorge Oduorfrom OFRA
Objectives for the meeting • To build a shared understanding about OFRA • To ensure we are doing the right thing, in the right way and using best practice to share what we have learned so that science is translated into changes in policy and practice OPTIMISING FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS IN AFRICA
The OFRA intervention logic • The problem... • low yields because of • low and inefficient use of fertilizer because of • poor fertilizer recommendations because of • lack of nutrient response data OPTIMISING FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS IN AFRICA
The OFRA intervention logic • The solution... • if we do on-farm trials to generate missing nutrient response data and • use these to generate better fertilizer recommendations and • communicate these effectively to smallholders and • smallholders implement the recommendations then • this will increase their productivity and profitability and • enhance household and national food and nutritional security and • increase incomes/gross domestic product OPTIMISING FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS IN AFRICA
The OFRA assumptions • The recommendations are for smallholders who: • farm on reasonably productive land • use improved varieties of prioritised staple crops • have chosen the best crop for the agro-ecological zone • practice intercropping/rotation • apply organic matter • wish to sell surpluses to accessible markets OPTIMISING FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS IN AFRICA
The OFRA outputs • Data and information • Trial data • Nutrient response curves by crop • Recommendations (high level) • Peer reviewed papers • Policy briefs • Sensitization • Publicity about better fertilizer recommendations • Training materials • For key information providers (extension, agro-dealers) • Extension materials • Tools and apps • Farmer friendly materials OPTIMISING FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS IN AFRICA
Some challenges • Overcoming disruptions to trials: civil disturbance, weather, pests and diseases... • Ensuring logistics enable trials to fit with the agricultural timetable • Ensuring that the synergies from working with 13 partner countries are identified & realised • Finding appropriate levels of communication, support and information sharing amongst the partners (many to many) • Maintaining quality of research and data OPTIMISING FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS IN AFRICA
Some challenges (2) • Clarify the audiences we need to talk to and • Packaging information to meet the needs of the audience - such as making sure the recommendations are farmer friendly OPTIMISING FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS IN AFRICA
Finally… • We have an exciting three days ahead as we move to respond to these challenges and plan to maximize the impact of OFRA OPTIMISING FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATIONS IN AFRICA
