  1. Quality of Service Studies in Telecommunication Laboratory Olli Alanen Telecommunication Laboratory 22.3.2007

  2. Projects • TeraBitti (1999-2004) - QoS in IP and MPLS networks • PalHaLa (2004-2006) – IPTV pilot network and related services were built • VizTool (2004-2006)– Prototype of future network management software • LaiLa (2006-2008) – Managing and monitoring of the new services in heterogeneous wireless networks • WiMALE (2005-…) – WiMAX MAC layer QoS studies in ns2 (Network Simulator 2)

  3. LaiLa / PalHaLa • IPTV Test Network with following services to digital set-top-boxes / televisions: • IPTV (possibility for free and pay channels) • Video-on-Demand (VoD) • Game Channels • Network PVR • WWW, e-mail, EPG, Billing, … • …

  4. IPTV Channels

  5. Game Servers

  6. Remote recording service

  7. VoD / Playback of recordings

  8. Pay channels

  9. Dynamic bandwidth regulation

  10. Nokia 770 Case • Linux Open Source library called Gstreamer was used to create a content adaptation server • MPEG2 IPTV-broadcast is transcoded to MPEG4 in real-time • Nokia 770 Linux PDA received the adapted stream using WLAN • This work is continuing currently and one MSc will be finalized about it on this year

  11. Nokia 770 Case

  12. VizTool IPTV Case

  13. Pricing based scheduling and classification • Simulator studies on ns2 and MatLab • Basic idea is to do scheduling decisions based on the revenue of the network operator • Each service class has its own cost function for bits and delay • Several PhD theses have been completed on the subject

  14. Pricing Based Scheduling

  15. Pricing Based Scheduling

  16. WiMAX QoS Studies • We have implemented WiMAX (802.16) to ns2 simulator • Most (the important ones) of the MAC layers functionalities • Some PHY level issues • Our research is concentrated on the WiMAX QoS • WiMAX can support strict QoS requirements on MAC level • Features, such as: • Scheduler / scheduling of the service classes • Contention parameters • Polling issues • ARQ parameters • VoIP specialties • … are studied

  17. WiMAX QoS Studies • Currently only PMP mode is supported • Mesh-mode is in future plans • In co-operation with Nokia Research Center since 2005 • Conference and journal articles have been wrote • Also MSc and PhD theses on the subject are done

  18. Example simulation scenario • 30 VoIP connections • One background connection (Best Effort / TCP)

  19. Results • In this scenario static parameters and our adaptive method were compared to each others

  20. The end! Thank you!
