Preterm babies Aprox. 2/3 of LBW babies in developed countries are preterm. Causes Multiple births Ac. Infections Hard physical labour Hypertension in pregnancy Small for date May be term or preterm Weigh less than 10 percentile for gestational age Result of IUGR Factors are related to Mother Fetus Placenta High risk of dying in infancy PEM INFECTION LBW
INCIDENCE World:25 million / year (17% of all live births) 95% of them in developing countries India 26% of all live births Target is less than 10%
RISK FACTORS FOR LBW • MALNUTRITION • INFECTION • UNREGULATED FERTILITY • IMPORTANCE –High incidence associate with mental retardation ,perinatal and infant mortality and morbidity, human wastage and suffering .IMR is 20 times more in LBW
PREVENTION • DIRECT INTERVETION-identify at risk pregnancy Malnutrition ,heavy work load ,disease and infection ,high BP • INDIRECT INTERVENTION – family planning Avoid smoking, improved sanitation, improving health and nutrition of young girls ,improved socioeconomic status ,political will
treatment • LBW can be divided into two groups those < 2 kg and between 2 - 2.5 kg • Incubatory care – adjustment of temp , humidity and oxygen supply • Feeding –breast milk by nasal catheter • Prevention of infection
Leading causes of death in LBW • ATELECTASIS • MALFORMATION • PULMNORY HAEM • INTRACRANIAL BLEEDING • PNEMONIA AND OTHER INFECTION
