Sikhism. How did this religion start?. -Guru Nanak. -Every morning/evening he sat down and would sing songs and meditate. -He disappeared/when he came back God told him he needed to be a leader and a teacher of people. -He spent many years traveling around the world teaching the religion.

How did this religion start? • -Guru Nanak. • -Every morning/evening he sat down and would sing songs and meditate. • -He disappeared/when he came back God told him he needed to be a leader and a teacher of people. • -He spent many years traveling around the world teaching the religion. • -Visited many holy places. • -He taught through many ceremonies and rituals. • -He set up a Sikh town called Kartarpur.

How do they practice their religion? • Only believe in 1 god • Worships in Diwan Hall • Everyone sits on floor to represent equalness • Gurdwara= Place to pray • Gurdwara ‘s hire people to read prayers • Some prayers last 5 hours • Others called Ardas last 15min • Most prayers in Punjabi • Never cut their hair • Amrit ceremonies = sikhs become full sikh’s welcomed to religion

  4. What do they believe in? • -Everyoneis equal • -Many different paths to god.-Sikhism not the only one • -Cannot cut their hair-5 K’s. • -Karma-Do something good, good things happen in later life, vice versa. • -Great respect for animals-Beef is holy-No tobacco, alcohol, or non-medical drugs.

Who are their religious figures? • -Main figure is Guru Nanak • he started the religion as a whole • -Total of 10 Gurus.Guru=Priest, Rabbi, Minister, etc. • -One god they pray to.-Neither male nor female.-Is everywhere, essence, eternal. • -Guru Nanak started Sikhism.-Travelled preaching the practice of Sikhism.-Retired at age 50. • -Last Guru, Gobind Singh died, after no more Humans were Gurus.

What Religious text does this religion follow? • -Main Sikhism book = the Guru Grath Sahib • -The Guru Grath Sahib important because written by first Guru= Guru Nahak • -Has 974 hymns by the first Guru • -There is also gutka = condensed version of Guru GrathSahib • -Contains most popular hymns by Guru Nahak • Both books contain right way to live

The Holidays and Festivals that the Sikhs celebrate • -Baisakhi = celebrating the Indian harvest season = get together and sing hymns • -Diwaili = festival of rights because Guru Har Gobind out of jail • -Diwaili = Festival of lights = hundreds of lights, fireworks, and bonfires • -Hola Mochalla = Anandpur India = March 17= Guru Gobind used to organized military exercises and mock battles for entertainment = now 1000s attend

  8. Traditional Clothing • Turban • Females wear scarves over their head • Mostly robes of sorts • Elegant fabric, thin • Tops=long, loose, thin • Bottom= loose, baggy • Bare feet in the golden temple • Special orange gown, blue cloth belt, white scarf for “the five beloved ones” fest.

Others • -Kesh= uncut hair – symbol of God’s gift • -Kangha= hair-comb – to show tidiness & discipline • -Kirpan= sword – symbol of justice & spiritual power • -Kachh= short trousers – to show readiness for action • -Kara = street wristlet – a symbol of unity and faith • -Men middle name = Singh • Singh = lion • -Women middle name = Kaur • Kaur = princess
