Indian Trade Routes = First Interstate Highways(see pg. 132) • Travelers used Indian trade routes. • Oregon Trail – from MO. to OR. • Santa Fe Trail – from MO. to NM./ Mexico • Mormon Trail – Led by Joseph Smith, and later Brigham Young, the Mormons came west (from NY to Utah) to escape religious persecution.

  5. Mexico and Settlers Clash • Slavery was illegal in Mexico. • 1829 – Mexico demanded that Americans in Texas free slaves. • 1833 - Stephen Austin (American) petitioned for Texan autonomy (sep. from Mex.) • President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna has Austin arrested

Texas Revolution: Remember the Alamo!!! • San Antonio, Texas – Mexican soldiers and Anglo militias fought in a mission (The Alamo). • 187 Anglo soldiers & hundreds of Mexicans were killed. • Later, 300 rebels were executed by Santa Anna. • In response, rebels captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign the Treaty of Velasco – Texas Independence from Mexico. • Republic of Texas, Sam Houston= President
