By the fifth century BCE, the Athenians were giving thanks to their gods, especially Dionysus, with festivals in which tragedies and comedies were performed. • In 534 BCE, Thespis changed the format of these performances by adding an actor who spoke to the chorus.
Two Important Greek Playwrights • Sophocles of Athens: wrote about 125 plays, but only seven have survived. His themes focused on fate, irony, and suffering. • Euripedesof Athens: wrote 90 plays, 18 of which have survived. His themes focused on unrequited love, war, and uncontrollable rage
What did Greek Theatre look like? • Held in open-air theaters • Usually contained all-day trilogies • Actors wore elaborate masks • A chorus helped the narrator tell the plot to the audience • The actors were always men, even for the female characters
