1. What is the function of the endocrine system? • Produce and release hormones which are chemical messengers that affect various tissues and organs of the body
2.Name the 8 endocrine glands of the human body? • Hypothalamus Pituitary • Thyroid Thymus • Parathyroid Pancreas • Ovaries Testes • Adrenals
3.What is a hormone? • A hormone is a chemical messenger that regulates activities of tissues and organs in the body.
4. How does the negative-feedback mechanism work? • The method used by the endocrine system to regulate the level of hormones in the blood. • Certain glands can detect how much of a given hormone is present in the blood. • Based on this information, either the signal to create more or stop releasing that hormone is given
5.What are the effects of adrenaline? • It causes an increase in heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure. • It is the “fight or flight” hormone to prepare the body for an emergency
6.How does the nervous system and endocrine system work together? • Both are messengers for the body • The nervous system sends messages to the brain that sends it to they hypothalamus. Based on this information other endocrine glands might be stimulated to produce hormones.
7. What is meant by the “fight or flight” response? • It is set in motion when the nervous system senses danger or an emergency • This causes the adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline into the circulatory system. • This chemical change causes an increase in heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure levels
8. How do the hormones released by the endocrine glands get around the body? • They are secreted into the blood stream which is part of the circulatory system
9. Two of the hormones secreted by the pancreas are insulin and glucagon. These hormones work to together to maintain a balanced blood sugar level. How do they do that? • Insulin is a chemical that helps cells convert sugar into energy. • It decreases the sugar level in the blood. Glucagon does the opposite of insulin. • It increases the blood sugar level by stimulation the conversion of stored sugar.
10.Why must some people take insulin as a medication on a regular basis? • There body does not produce enough insulin. • The insulin helps the cells to convert sugar into energy. • If there isn’t enough insulin in the blood, then the blood sugar level goes too high.
