Industrialization in England: Transforming Lives Through Progress and Challenges

Industrialization in England brought significant changes to people's lives. While it offered higher wages and economic opportunities that led to urbanization and technological progress, it also resulted in poor living and working conditions, child labor, and health hazards. Despite the challenges, there was hope for improvement and a realization of the need for better city planning and social reforms.

  1. 7.2 Industrialization in England

  2. Life Changes • Industrialization has great benefits and causes great harm • People earned higher wages in factories than farms – leads to better quality of life • Increased economic opportunity leads to urbanization – migration from farms to cities

  3. Urbanization & Living Conditions • City growth leads to problems • Lack of city codes means no laws for building construction or sewage removal • Lack of police protection • Streets lack drainage • Families cramped in small living spaces • Disease spreads, housing fires common

  4. Urbanization & Working Conditions • A 14-to-16 hour work day very common • Six day work week • Poorly lit factories lead to many accidents • Child labor widespread • No health insurance • Machines often replaced people in jobs

  5. Positive Effects • Jobs created • Technological progress and invention • Standard of living increases • Education expands • Need for city planning realized • Healthier diets • Higher wages, better conditions, shorter hours (long term benefit) • Hope that life can improve
