Credibility Gap • What Johnson was saying and what the reports were reporting were not matching – became known as the “Credibility Gap” • It gave the anti war protesters more leverage
Opposition to the war • 1965, a large number of anti-war activists demonstrated by burning their draft cards. • Congress responded by making the penalty for burning a draft card five years in prison and a $5000 fine.
Students conducted sit-ins at universities • 1967 over 125,000 peace demonstrators marched to the United Nations. Later in 1967, over 75,000 marched to the Pentagon to protest the war.
Young people created chaos an numerous draft boards by breaking in to destroy draft files, flooding them with applications for conscientious objector status, ignoring draft notices, and refusing service.
In 1968 a poll revealed that twenty to thirty percent of college students, if drafted, would “seriously contemplate” refusing service
