  2. Alternative Work Arrangements Overview • Job content is changing, so is the “context” • The "what" is changing, so the “where” and the “when” must change with it • Flexibility is the new watch word • All about work-life balance • Key tool in attracting the best employees

  3. Alternative Work Arrangements Types of Arrangements • The compressed work week • Still work 37.5 hours but in 4 days, not 5 • Can pick your day off • Other 4 days are longer, can impact family • Flexible Working Hours • Aka “Flextime” • Company will have several schedules, you pick one, for example: • 8:00 – 4:30 • 8:30 – 5:00 • 9:30 – 5:30

  4. Alternative Work Arrangements Types of Arrangements • Job Sharing • Two people share one job, • Can be 50/50 or a different split (same with pay) • More than one day off • Requires a lot of coordination/communication • Telecommuting • Work some or all of your work hours at home or satellite location • Big in technology industries and jobs that don’t require a lot of interaction

  5. Alternative Work Arrangements Types of Arrangements • Part Time Work • Many people now have two totally different, unrelated jobs • All about fitting things around family life • Reduced work week • Work 3 days or 4 days • Pay reduced accordingly • Sabbatical or “4 for 5” • Earn 4 year’s pay over 5 years • Work 4 years and take the 5th off with pay

  6. Next Week… • We start chapter 16 • We will be running an activity called “BOH Consulting” • It will not be a normal BOH week • Attendance is critical • Bringing your text books is critical
