  1. Volunteering at the Library A presentation by Sarah Phippen

  2. About the Project • For three weeks I assisted Librarian Thea Koehler in the Capitol Hill Day School’s Library. • Capitol Hill Day School (CHDS) is an independent, private school located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. • CHDS serves students in grades PK through 8th grade • I attend for 9 years, from Kindergarten through 8th grade, and wanted to give back to the school by helping out my old teacher

  3. My Duties • A great deal of my job involved cataloguing library books for inventory at the end of the year. I organized and scanned each book in the library to make sure that every book was accounted for, as well as to figure out which books were missing and needed to be returned. • I helped students check books in and out of the library. • I helped students pick out books to check out, based on their interests and reading level. • I chose and read books to the class during story time, allowing Ms. Koehler time to do other work.

  4. Working in the Library

  5. What I Gained from the Experience • Coming back the CHDS was fantastic. I had not visited in almost four years; now, after working in the library, I wish I had come back sooner. • Knowing that I had been a great help to Thea was so rewarding. Thea told me that after a day of cataloguing books, she usually has to go home and ice her hands, and she was very lucky that she had me there to help. • Thea retired at the end of the 2012 school year. She was not as sturdy as she used to be; knowing that I made packing up and closing out the school year much easier for Thea than it would have been if she were working alone brings me pleasure.
