Environment and Value chain development LIVES familiarization workshop April 22-24, 2013 Adama,
Environment and vcdevelopment (+) • Pollination of irrigated fruits/vegetables • Area closures increase biodiversity (reduced land degradation, bee forage, increase in nutrient-rich species, etc) • By products from fruits/vegetables could be a source of supplementary livestock feed • Nitrogen fixation through relay cropping system with leguminous forages
Environment and vc development (-) Dairy/meat/poultry • Zoonotic diseases, especially in urban/peri- urban areas • Smell pollution and methane emission • Depletion of soil nutrients (crop residues) • Excessive use of veterinary drugs/hormones • Land degradation • Genetic erosion
Environment and vc development (-) • Irrigated vegetables and fruits • Salinity/alkalinity of soils • Ground and or surface water depletion • Use of agrichemicals on human, fish and bee population • Malaria • Weed infestation of fields if care is not made • Destruction of canals if allowed to excessively grow on the edges
Potential interventions • Zonation of areas • Reduced number of animals by increasing productivity • Food safety is an integral part of LIVES project • Use of better local breeds • KM and CD • Awareness creation • Use of appropriate chemicals and timing of application • Use of IPM (manure use, crop rotation, etc) • Use appropriate irrigation practices • Use of modeling and monitoring • Malaria dealt with the existing government programmes • Develop EASR and EMP developed for commodities with possible environmental impact
Follow up • Include observations in the 6 monthly report • May conduct research through partners/consultants • Identified studies for MSc students to conduct research
