Economic & Technical Trends Search Technology • Today’s most effective information discovery infrastructure is Internet catalogs and search engines—no longer the catalogs of research libraries. • The ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval has tracked the vast search literature for about forty years. • Three IEEE journals provide online numbers on recent technical developments that include personalized research results and context sensitivity, geographically sensitive search, and enhancing user convenience with graphical maps of search “hits”.
