Black = Notes • Red = Just read/discuss or write it if you need it
Food • any substance ingested that sustains life
Systems that work with nutrition • Digestive system= breakdown food nutrients • Respiratory system = bring in oxygen to burn nutrients • Cardiovascular system = carries nutrients and oxygen to cells • Urinary system = discard wastes
Food is broken into Classes of Nutrients • Nutrients are essential dietary factors used by the body to meet important needs. • There are 6 main groups.
Protein function • growth & repair of tissue (mitosis) • provide energy
Protein Sources • meats, dairy, eggs, fish, nuts, legumes (chick peas), tofu, grains
Detect proteins lab #44 • Dwayne Johnson, “The Rock”, sidelines in cat rescue. • He needs to learn how to find out which drink would give him the most proteins to help his muscles.

Water functions • Transports nutrients and waste • Regulates body temperature • Essential for chemical reactions
Water sources • Fruits and vegetables • Juice • Soups • Milk and other drinks
Vitamin functions • Help with chemical reactions • Help with E production • Help fight off infections • Repair damaged tissue
Sources • Fruits, veggies, dairy, whole grains, eggs, liver
Mineral functions • Building tissues (bones and teeth) • Maintaining fluid balance • Helping muscles contract • Transport Oxygen (O2) in the blood
Mineral sources • Dairy products, legumes, seafood and fish, fruits, vegetables • e.g. Calcium, Potassium, Sodium, Phosphorus, Iron

Nutrition Label • Gives nutritional information contained in one serving of a product • in grams and % RDI (Recommended Daily Intake)
Nutrition Label looks like this Size of recommended portion Number of servings per package Calories per serving Amount of nutrients by weight and % of RDI % of RDI for vitamins
Food Label Activity • Go to the food package stations and collect information from the food labels onto your chart. • DO NOT MOVE THE FOOD PACKAGES • We will discuss the results on the board.
Canada’s Food Guide • If Canadians can be taught to eat healthy foods and exercise mildly, it will reduce the strain on the Socialist Health Care System that is in place (Medicare)
