The English Reformation King Henry VIII England’s most famous king Ruled from 1509-1547 Stubborn impatient and cruel Married 6 queens • Catherine of Aragon-annulled • Anne Boleyn-killed • Jane Seymour-died • Anne of Cleves-annulled • Catherine Howard-killed • Catherine Parr-out lived Henry His wife Catherine didn’t have a son so he asked the Pope toannul, or cancel his marriage
What happened??? • The Pope said no! • He got The Archbishop of Canterbury to grant the annulment • Henry VIII was excommunicated • He declared himself head of the Church of England or the Anglican Church • Only supported English nobles that supported his cause!

Counter Reformation 1500 and 1600s The Catholic Church tried to convince people to return to the church Jesuits-taught, preached and fought heresy The Catholics knew they had to make some changes
Council of Trent • Clarified Catholic beliefs • Rules for the behavior of the clergy • New seminaries were established • Seminary-school to train priests
Religious Wars in FranceLed to the Edict of Nantes • 1598 Catholicism was France’s official religion • But…Huguenots (French Protestants)- could worship freely
The Counter-Reformation in Spain • King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella ordered all Jews and Muslims out of Spain • They also started the Spanish Inquisition– a court to investigate cases of heresy (very cruel)
Closure • Please write a script of a dinner conversation between the Pope, Martin Luther, Henry VIII and Queen Isabella. • What would they agree and disagree about? • Would it be a positive or negative dinning experience? • Be specific!
