Central Puget Sound Regional Fare Coordination Project • Project Purpose:To implement a common “seamless” fare collection system -- using smart card technology -- for bus, rail and ferry travel in the Central Puget Sound region • Partners:Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro Transit, Kitsap Transit, Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, Washington State Ferries (new partners may join in the future) • Status:Design completed, testing and implementation underway; rollout targeted for early 2009

  2. How the Transit Smart Card Works • Microchip on card holds stored cash value or transit pass • Via RF data transfer w/in 10cm, device validates fare payment, card is updated • Usage data sent to central clearinghouse for revenue reconciliation among transit agencies • Cardholder can reload value or buy pass via web (or current means) for automated load onto card TransLink card and device in use on San Francisco Muni

Deployment Logistics • Thousands of equipment installations completed or underway on vehicles, at transit facilities, at retail locations, etc. • Training for hundreds of employees • Wholesale business process changes for operations, customer services, finance, IT • Enormous public outreach and education effort will be required

  5. Key Issues and Challenges • Vendor resources and financial instability • System security and technology evolution • Data privacy issues • Interagency operations and governance • Scale of change for agencies and customers
