Communication skills needed by researchers, outreach activities give you those skills • Want people to know • Want people to understand • If you can explain it to a 10 year old- you can explain it to anyone • Presentation skills • Funding agencies increasingly require outreach component • Enhances own understanding at fundamental level, gives perspective • Tailor talks- style, content, suitability (audience) • Value- collective- institute
Timetable Mondays- 11am in interactive hub, Conway Tuesdays- 2pm in C113 Health Sciences Outreach session- TBA
Overview of module 10 contact hours covering • Presentation skills, learning styles • Communication skills • Interactive presentation skills • Peer review skills • Expert speakers
COMP41380 To pass this module students need to: • Attend at least 80% of the workshops/seminars • Students must regularly submit to online blog- and submit a module report

Guest Speakers • MrBarry Brophy- Presentation skills • Dr Geraldine O’Neill- Teaching and Learning
Mr Barry Brophy • College lecturer in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering in UCD • Provides presentation skills training to companies mainly in the technical sector and gives courses in general presentation skills
Dr Geraldine O’Neill • Teaching development officer in the UCD Centre for Teaching and Learning • She has been involved in the strategic development of teaching and learning in UCD and has supported many institutional teaching and learning projects
Homework • Take a look at YouTube, Ted, etc. • Look for own example of excellent speaker • Post links to speakers on blog • http://reachingoutreach.wordpress.com • Examples will be discussed in the next session
