The supporting details in a paragraph can be ordered in different ways. The order that would be used depends upon what particular purpose the writer is trying to establish. Below are the four ways in ordering details. Spatial order Sequential order Time order Climactic order Back
SPATIAL ORDER Example : Since the house was supposed to be empty, Chanda was worried. From the door in the entranceway, she saw the open rear window. The drawer of the table in the middle of the hall was open with its contents on the floor .. It is describing a scene from a physical position. Back
TIME ORDER Example : If Lito gets everything done, it will be a miracle. Before school he has to fix breakfast and make lunches for his two sisters. In the afternoon he has to pick up his school. Later he has basketball practice. Tonight he must study for his science test. It is organizing details according to the time that they happen, such as first to last or most recent to least recent. SEQUENTIAL ORDER Example : First, drive one kilometer north and turn left on Ipil. Then, turn right on Dao Street and drive two kilometers. You’ll see the shopping center on the left-hand side of the street. Turn left at the yellow sign. It is arranging details as they would naturally follow, step by step, as in directions or recipes. CLIMACTIC ORDER Example : Jeremy, not suspecting a thing, walked into the darkened room. He heard a giggle. Suddenly bright lights flooded the room. His friends and family filled the room. They shouted, “ Surprise ! Happy birthday, Jeremy!” It is organizing details in a way that builds interest. It could be done by putting the most important detail on the first part or at the last part. Back
