  4. The Modern Luau • King Kamehameha II introduced the modern luau in 1819 • Luaus were celebrated when a child became of age, when a new canoe was launched, or when warriors returned home after long journeys • Today, Luaus celebrate events such as weddings, graduations, and first birthdays

History of the Luau • Luaus are traditional Hawaiian celebrations • Originally called ‘aha ‘aina, these celebrations became known as luaus about 150 years ago • The term luau originates from the Hawaiian and other Hawaiian languages, and is the name for the taro leaf • Taro leaves are combined with others foods, such as chicken or fish, and then baked in coconut milk
