Kyoto Protocol and Japan • Japan ratified the KP in 2002 • Under the KP, Japan is required to reduce 6% from the 1990 emission level (base year) • In Japanese FY 2002, Japanese GHG emission level is 8% above the base year (=> nearly total 14% of 1,223 Mt of Co2-eq. to reduce from today’s statistics) • High costs for domestically reducing GHGs • Growing number of interests in CDM&JI projects in the Japanese business community after Russian ratification • Japan GHG Reduction Fund (JGRF) launched in December 2004 with committed fund of 140 million USD
