Capacity Development for CDM Project Presentation of Selected PDD Methane capture and combustion from swine treatment for Peralilo By Kwaku Wiafe Senior Project Officer KITE ….innovating energy solutions….
Outline Description Baseline methodology Additionality Monitoring Methodology and Plan Calculation of GHG emissions Environmental Impacts ….innovating energy solutions….
Project Description • Owner - Agrosuper, largest pork production company in Chile • Project - Install an advanced waste management system to reduce GHG emissions from pig and poultry waste • Technology -anaerobic digester and activated sludge treatment • GHG reduced - CH4, N2O and CO2
Baseline Methodology • Approach - Technology representing economically attractive course of action • Open lagoon system being used as per voluntary agreement with government • Used by 50% of pork industry in Chile due to low cost • Waste water stored in lagoons for 5-9 months then applied on land as irrigation and fertilizer
Application of Baseline Methodology • List of possible baseline scenarios • Solid Storage – Land Application • Pit Storage – Land Application • Storage lagoon – Land Application • Anaerobic lagoon – Land Application • Press Anaerobic Lagoon – Land Application • Digester – Land Application (phase I) • Digester–Aerobic Treatment (phase II) • Solid Separation-Composting-Land Application
Baseline Methodology • Initial Screening based on: • Legal Constrains • Historical Practice • Available Technology • Manure management system appropriate for national conditions • Conclusions-Possible Baselines are options 4,5,6&7

Monitoring Methodology • Approved methodology – AM0006 • Monitored parameters and default values used to calculate project emissions and reductions to baseline • Animal population • Average pig weight • Manure flow rate • Flow of sludge from Aerobic Treatment • 5 days BOD • Nitrogen content of manure • C02 concentration in gas flow • Flare efficiency • Biogas flow
Environmental impact/SD Benefits • Odours reduced • Pathogen and vector control • Treated water suitable for irrigation • Potential use of biogas for electricity generation
Stakeholders comments • Positive comments received • No objections to project received • All requests for clarification and information dealt with in a timely manner
Conclusion • PDD generally reflects that for organic waste projects • Key issues to note: • How additionality was determined • Data requirements for monitoring
