  4. Reading • Silent Reading 20 minutes everyday and 30 minutes daily at home • Reading Journals • Novel Studies/Short Story and Poetry Analysis • The Pearl, Claudette Colvin:Twice Towards Justice, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, and The Parrott in the Oven.

Writing • Teacher directed assignments until Winter Break • Genre Cycles • Conferencing • Then, writer’s workshop begins • Student choice of topic and genre • Weekly conferences with peers and teachers • Mini-lessons • Page requirements per week • Polished writing due every 4 weeks • Poetry Coffee House • Publication

  6. Social Studies • US History: Colonies to Post Civil War Reconstruction • Sources: • History Alive • A People’s History of the United States • Primary Documents • Essays • Field Trips • Guns, Germs and Steel • Films • Artwork • Any other wonderful opportunity
