  1. Strategies of the Civil Rights Standard 8.1 E.Q. What were some of the strategies that proved to be effective during the civil Rights Movement?

  2. World Strategies • Gandhi • Non – Violent Protest: Protecting rights through peace means. • Civil Disobedience: The refusal to obey an unjust law.

  3. NAACP • Used the court system to seek advancement in the civil rights movement. • Focused on Anti – Lynching Laws. • Brown v. Board of Education: Supreme Court declares segregation in public schools unconstitutional. • Because it violate the 14th Amendment. • Thurgood Marshall: Head NAACP lawyer; • Argued Brown Case and 1st African American Supreme Court Justice.

Reasons for Non – Violence • Sites were specifically selected to show to the nation and the world the face of racism in order to get the support of the electorate for government assistance in securing civil rights. • Media: Played a very important role and sites were specifically selected to show the nation and the world the face of racism. • Upset and alienated the general public.

  5. Montgomery Bus Boycott • Rosa Parks: Arrested for refusing to give up a bus seat to a white man. • Though she was in the black section. • Civil rights activist whose protest started the Bus Boycott. • 1st organize movement by African Americans to fight segregation. • Exerted economic pressure. Lasted 381 days.

  6. Sit - Ins • Started by the Congress of Racial Equality. • First to use this tactic; SNCC also used it to desegregate all white lunch counters. • Morgan V. Virginia (1946): Segregation on interstate buses was unconstitutional.

  7. Freedom Riders • Tested the Supreme Court decision banning segregation on interstate bus routes & facilities in bus terminals. Crossing lines. • Violence provoked exactly the response the freedom riders wanted. • News papers throughout the nation and abroad denounced the beatings. • JFK used federal marshals to escort the riders the last leg of their ride. • Interstate Commerce Commission banned segregation in all interstate travel facilities.

  8. Birmingham Campaign • Most segregated city in America, known for its strict enforcement of total segregation public life, • Reputation for racial violence, including 18 bombing • May 2, more than 100 African American children marched in Birmingham. • Continued protests, an economic boycott, and negative media coverage captured all of it. • Also convinced JFK that a new civil rights act would be needed to end racial violence. • Would push registering blacks to vote in Mississippi.
