Breakdown of the Union • Military commanders in the South turned over U.S. forts and arsenals to Southern forces • Allowed growth of the Confederate Army • Left the Union weak in the South • By April 1861, the Union held three forts in the South
Fort Sumter • Bombing of Fort Sumter starts the war • Lincoln calls for 75,000 volunteers • “Put down the insurrection” • Three month enlistment • Four states in the Upper South secede
First Battle of Bull Run • “One Big Battle” mentality • Met in Northern Virginia on July 21, 1861 • Southerners proved victorious • Victory was not decisive • Both sides hunkered down for a long war
