A few simple truths… • Higher Education is free at the point of entry • All students can apply for a maintenance loan towards living costs. The amount varies depending on household income. • You will not pay anything until you are earning £21,000per annum • You will pay 9% of any additional income over £21,000.
A few simple truths (cont.) • If your salary falls below £21,000 your payments will stop. • The payments for your tuition fee and maintenance loan will be made by your employer and deducted from your wages automatically.
A few simple truths (cont.) • If you are earning £25,000 after you graduate, your payments will be approximately £30 per month • The loan is written off after 30 years. • You will pay interest on your loan
More simple truths… • If you withdraw you will still owe money • Student loans will not affect your credit file • There will be NSPs, fee waivers, bursaries, and scholarships plus other support available to those who are eligible. • You will owe money but it is not a bad debt!
What is available? • Tuition Fee Loan - repayable • Maintenance Loan (living costs for students) - repayable • Non repayable grants and bursaries • Non repayable individual university support
Tuition Fee Loan • Apply for your loans from January onwards to: • www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance • Paid to the university directly • Payable for each year of study • NOT means tested • Up to £9000 per year
Maintenance Loan(living cost loans) • 65% of the loan is not income assessed in 2014/15 • 35% income assessed • Paid directly to the student in 3 instalments in academic year
Maintenance Grant • Non-repayable • £25K or less household income, you could be entitled to the maximum of £3,387 • On a sliding scale • See the Student Finance Made Simple Sheet
Additional Support at CCCU • National Scholarship: • £2000 fee waiver • £1000 cash bursary • Bursaries: • £1000 • £500 • Music and Sports Scholarships • Care leavers’ bursary
National Scholarship Programme • Household income below £25k • Ineligible students: NHS and post-grads inc. PGCE’s • Any school/college in Kent and Medway www.canterbury.ac.uk/finance • Year 1: £2,000 fee waiver • Years 2 & 3 only: £1,000 bursary each year • Some part-time students: see green leaflet for further details
IMPORTANT • Our allocation of National Scholarship is: • Automatic • Scholarships are limited • will begin in late JULY • first come, first served. • We must have your household income information • Achieve top 25% of predicted attainment if there are more applications than scholarships • Scholarships will be allocated as evenly as possible among partners.
Main Bursary Scheme • For students that do not qualify (missed out), or are not eligible, for the NSP • Ordinarily resident in the UK • Household income under £25,000 • £1,000 per annum cash bursary • Some part-time students will be eligible, please see the green leaflet for more details
Sport and Music Bursaries • The Sports Bursary – apply through Faculty (any subject) • The Music Scholarships – apply through the Department of Music and Performing Arts (music only; variable amounts)
Care Leavers’ Bursary • £1,200 per year for eligible students • Must be a in care or a care leaver • Under a care order when 16 or less for 13 weeks
What Happens Next? • Apply for your tuition and maintenance loan/grant from end of January in the year you intend to start university • Apply at the latest before cut off date (end of May) • Tick the box to share information • Wait to hear from Student Loan Company • We will contact you if you are potentially eligible for CCCU support
NHS Funded Programmes • Thinking about Nursing, Midwifery etc? • The NHS will pay your tuition fees • Grant of £1k per year from NHS • Bursaries are means-tested and you can also apply for a loan. • This depends on: • your household income • how many weeks your programme will run per year • where you live.
Disabled Students’ Allowance • You can apply for a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) in addition to your student loans if you have a: • disability • long-term health condition • mental health condition • specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia
Additional Facts • Repayment taken out of wages April after you graduate • Debt collectors will not chase you • Twins or triplets – no additional help!
Additional Facts • Change of circumstances? Go back to SLC, you can get re-assessed • Children? 85% of childcare paid • Access to Learning Fund – additional financial support administered by the university – but limited funds!
Money • Bank account with student overdraft • Try to save some money beforehand – student loans do not always go in immediately • Use your long holidays wisely – get a job • Budget! It is important • Shop with others – you don’t need 5 bottles of washing up liquid! • Look for savings where you can (e.g. NUS card, National Rail card, etc)
Accommodation whilst at uni • Costs approximately from £85 to £140 per week. Average cost for standard room is £100 per week. • Bedrooms have TV point (you will need a licence) and access to internet; some have double beds and en suite facilities (these cost more!). • Bills included – pay rent at start of term for full year or pay termly • Accommodation within a 30 min walk from campus • Allocated by priority and first comefirst served basis. Check postcode restrictions! • Student houses – some rents include bills – go for these!
Additional expenses • Books and course related trips and costs • Travel costs • Social costs • Laundry • Mobile phone • Clothing/cosmetics/hair • Food • Shop together • DON’T buy ready meals!
Extra Help • Student discount card • Discount on Oyster card (30%) in London • Railcard – 25% • Studentbeans.com • Part-time jobs • Work in the long holidays
Advice from a mum of 2, both at university…. • Get an overdraft • Cash, shopping vouchers, useful items for Xmas • Get your parents to check over everything! Nominate them on your finance form • Don’t go too far away from home! • Don’t tell them everything you do! • Be honest – they love you and will support you, no matter what you decide!
