How It Works • Windmills are built to collect the energy from the wind. • The blades of the windmills slow down the wind speed and harness its kinetic energy. • When the blades turn, they power a connected drive shaft. • The shaft then turns an electric generator to produce electricity.
Uses • Wind used to be mostly used to propel ships, but recently they have been used much more to generate electricity. • The energy and electricity produced can be used to help power farms, factories, and even homs.
Impact on the Environment • Wind power does not emit any Carbon Dioxide or air pollution • It does not require any water, mining, or drilling • We do not need to transport fuel, and wind power does not generate radioactive, hazardous, or polluted wastes
The Costs • Windmills are a little costly to build, but the money that will be saved will more then pay for it • New wind turbines are cost efficient and can be erected in three months • There really is no social cost, the wind energy creates no pollution and no hassle for the people using it
Acceptance Wind power is widely accepted today because it has almost no bad effects on the environment. It does take up land otherwise used as a habitat for animals, but it makes virtually no pollution. It is a little costly for home use, but after the initial set-up there is almost no cost. It cannot provide all of the energy needed in your home, but it is very efficient, clean, and smart energy.
