  1. FYI/La Casa Grant Collaboration • Awarded in October, 2005—Teen/RHY Dating Violence Outreach Grant--$75,000 • U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services • Main Objectives of the grant: • Staff Cross Training • Dating Violence Education for Shelter and TLP youth • Intervention for youth affected by dating or DV (experiential therapy for La Casa kids)

  2. FYI/La Casa Grant Collaboration • Grant has provided funding for the following: • Staff time and organization • Presentation materials • Updating video collection of dating violence education • Materials to be used for experiential therapy

  3. Cross Training • La Casa provides regular training to staff at FYI for their pre-service orientation on domestic/dating violence dynamics and the affects of DV on children and teens • FYI has invited La Casa staff to participate in trainings on Behavioral Management and Developing a Culture of Care • FYI has presented at La Casa staff meetings on services available at FYI

  4. Dating Violence Education • La Casa staff has conducted regular group presentations with shelter and TLP youth • Topics have included: • Types of Abuse • Cycle of Abuse and Power and Control • Healthy Relationships • Gender Role Stereotypes • What do guys/girls want out of relationships? • Evaluating relationship and relationship role models

Intervention for Youth Affected by Domestic Violence • FYI Youth Special Project’s Coordinator Emilia Casillas has been working with our kids, offering special activities programming for children living at or receiving counseling from La Casa domestic violence shelter, focusing on experiential therapy.

  6. Intervention for Youth Affected by Domestic Violence • Nutrition/Hygiene classes (Making healthy ice cream, washing hands) • Horseback Riding • High-Ropes activities • Leasburg Dam field trip • Radium Springs Mother’s Day trip • Peace Camp • Super Saturday Fun-Day!

  7. Future Hopes for Grant • Increase number of cross training opportunities • Train Transitional Living Program clients as mentors for La Casa children and develop programming that for mentors and mentees • Develop more effective ways of identifying victims/witnesses of DV at FYI and getting them connected to services

  8. Where to start for your agency? • Attend community meetings (Such as Homeless Providers meetings) to network with other community providers • Look for a community partner with a similar scope or whose clients often overlap with yours • Identify needs that the other has a specialty (eg. Domestic violence and experiential therapy) • Find grants that would fund such endeavors—Grants love community partnerships!!!
