  1. Literary Genres

  2. 1.) "Dad!" the boy shouted. "I'm not like you, and I never will be. I don't want to sit in a boring, old bank my whole life and count money. I want to see the WORLD!" The man scratched his beard, eventually took his eyes off the old living room carpet, and said as if it was an effort to stay calm, "Fine, son. You want to see the world?" He said the word, "world" sarcastically. "Go ahead, waste your money, waste your life, throw it all away." "Okay, dad," the boy said cooly, placing his hand on the door, "I will.“ "And once you've done that," he yelled, just as the boy slammed the door, "you can settle into your new life of being homeless!"

  3. 2.) It took no effort to observe that the man standing upon the precipice was an elf. His long, silky, blonde hair, and pointy ears were dead giveaways. However, what was amazing about him was his skill with a bow. He stood with feet firmly on the ground, as if he was a plant that had taken root in the rocky ground, standing solid, like a statue. His arm pulled back, the arrow would sing through the crisp air and never fail to hit its mark. A goblin here, a goblin there. The field below was his playground, but it was the goblins' graveyard. In no time at all, hundreds lay strewn below, some groaning, others already gone into the next world.

  4. 3.) The opera was boring but satisfying. Lincoln never liked these sorts of things, but he was happy nonetheless. His bill had just passed, ensuring that no African American would ever again be the property of another. He had established liberty for all Americans, and although it would take some time for the rest of the country to accept it, the nation had taken one more step toward equality for all. His happiness, however, would be short-lived. He had no idea that his life was about to end.

  5. 4.) Harris exited the bar through the back door so that his friends wouldn't have the opportunity to make him feel bad for leaving the party early. What he didn't expect to find was an odd figure standing in the almost vacant alley. For all that he could see, the figure was dead. Standing there with a lifeless expression. A few steps closer, and Harris could start to see that the figure was wearing a baggy yellow suit with a red fluffy collar and that his face was coated with white makeup. Red circles around his eyes and a red, wiry wig. The figure was a clown.

  6. 4.) continued Harris' first instinct to run was replaced by the memory that he had recently relayed his fear of clowns to his closest friends. Surely, this was one of them just trying to scare him. After all, it was Halloween. "Joel," said Harris, cautiously creeping closer to the clown, "is that you, dude?" He noticed a knife slide out of the clown's long sleeve but still wasn't sure whether or not this was a joke. The only way to find out was to walk closer.

  7. 5.) Pulling his collar tighter around his frigid neck, the investigator crept closer to the handcuffed man, or Scarecrow as the town had come to know him. The man, creature, or whatever he was, was on his knees, defeated at last, wearing his traditional potato sack over his head. The investigator had had his suspicions all along that Scarecrow might be his brother-in-law, who had escaped from prison three months ago, around the same time Scarecrow begin terrorizing the town. This was the moment he had been waiting for. So much searching, and now all he had to do was pull the mask off.

  8. 6.) Odysseus was a man of legend, but right now he felt like a failure. The god Poseidon was playing with his ship like it was nothing but a child's toy in the bathtub, throwing torrent after torrent of rain, wave after wave of ocean water at his fragile boat. Odysseus knelt and prayed to Athena for help, but then remembered that he possessed a huge bag of wind, given to him as a gift from Athena. Untying the string that held the bag shut, he nearly fell backwards as a massive blast of wind escaped, sending his ship speeding away, further and further away from the anger of the great sea god.

  9. 7.) Come on, it's my new car!" shouted Lindsay. "My mom'll kill me," said Steve, holding the handle of a lawn mower. "I'm grounded, and I'm not even allowed to come back inside until I've finished cutting the grass." "It's the chance of a lifetime, baby," she said winking at him, patting the seat next to her. "I don't know," said Steve. He looked at her bashfully, his heart pounding at the way her hair blew behind her in the slight summer breeze. "Now or never," she said, looking at him, her voice pleading. "Okay," he whispered, "but shhhh." He tiptoed to the edge of the driveway, jumped into the car, and they were off, both with racing hearts and smiles upon their faces, in love.

  10. 8.) The androids raised their hands, shooting lasers from their fingertips as they ran toward the humans, who ignited their laser swords only just in time. Bright and fluorescent, their swords sliced through the air as well as the necks in the onslaught of androids. This is when rocket booster shoes were especially useful, allowing the humans to soar over the androids, and set in motion a devastating aerial attack. In no time at all, the ground was a trash heap of nuts and bolts, android arms and heads. Robots were no match for humans and laser swords.
