Maldon District Funding Fair, Wednesday 27th February 2013 Jill Curd - Grants Officer Essex Community Foundation An independent charitable trust VISION • A strong generous community – an Essex where people work together to enhance the quality of local life MISSION • To inspire philanthropy and charitable giving – matching people, ideas, resources and needs to make a lasting difference

Firstly some background…. • ECF was established in 1996 by local businessman • Built an endowment fund of £20 million • Manage 90 charitable funds offering philanthropy services for a wide range of fund-holders • Effective grant-maker to the local voluntary sector • Distribute c£2 m each year to projects and organisations that benefit local people through local organisations • Conduit for government funding and other funding programmes • Part of the UK Community Foundations

ECF Grants Programmes Strategic and open grant programmes for not-for-profit organisations Funds may have a geographic theme, or be cause specific We match applicants to the relevant funds In general terms fund-holders are looking for requests which address grassroots social welfare and pressing need in the community Funds with unique criteria or who meet at specific times of year will be advertised via a Call for Applications Regularly check our website / sign up for our E-newsletter

  4. Who are our fund-holders? Family Funds e.g. Bartella Charitable Fund, Hew Watt Family Fund, Minter Family Fund, Spence Family Fund Companies e.g. e2v, Essex & Suffolk Water, Greenfields Housing Association, Oval, Britvic Individuals –usually anonymous Trust transfers e.g. Firebird Fund, Harlow Recreation Trust, Searle Trust, PB Charitable Trust, Hutton Charity Fund-raising Funds e.g. High Sheriff’s Fund, Southend Fund Donor Advised e.g. Essex Millennium Fund, ECC Chairman’s Fund Flow Though Funds e.g. Comic Relief, Surviving Winter Appeal We also work with other funders on specific programmes, e.g. BIG Lottery, Henry Smith Charity

  5. What makes a good application? The guidelines have been followed and requests demonstrate that they fulfil criteria Ability to illustrate why the project / service is needed Good explanation of intended outcomes The proposal /service is well planned and it is clear how the money will be spent Accurate budgets and evidence of good financial management Evidence that the organisation is well managed, capable of successfully running the project / service, ability to provide effective monitoring and evaluation

  6. What ECF looks for How the application provides value for money Evidence of need Good Management & Governance Public benefit - evidence of community use / involvement The difference made and lasting benefit / sustainability

What is not helpful: Poorly written / lack of information, questions not answered Overuse of jargon which is not explained Saying ‘see attached’, assumptions made Threatening the funder Not providing the requested essential documents Making unsubstantiated claims Poor record of returning Monitoring and Evaluation ‘Putting all the eggs in one basket’

What we can’t support Projects that operate outside of Essex, or benefit non-Essex residents (unless a Fund states otherwise) Political or religious activities which are not for the wider public benefit Statutory agencies including Parish Councils and Schools in the discharge of their statutory obligations Contributions towards General Appeals e.g. £10k request for a project totalling £100k Activities which support animal welfare Retrospective Funding i.e. grants for activities which have already taken place

Applying • Rolling Programme – apply at any time • Calls for Applications – for funds that only meet at specific time(s) of the year • In most cases the general application form process fits all of our funds (small - up to £1,000, large - up to £10,000) N.B. average grant is £3,500 and there is a 1 in 4 success rate • 2 stage process via our website Grants page – online (part A) and paper based (part B plus essential documents) • Read the guidelines carefully • Include all essential documents requested • Call and talk to us first if necessary • Use the services of Maldon CVS for advice N.B Decisions can take up to 12 weeks. Grants are for one year
